🦅 Hawks Deployed at East Yorkshire Train Stations to Combat Pigeons

Pigeons have long been a nuisance at train stations, causing maintenance headaches and discomfort for passengers. In a bid to tackle the problem, Northern has launched a 12-week trial using Harris Hawks to deter the birds from nesting at Beverley, Filey, and Driffield stations. Unlike traditional pest control methods, these hawks won’t hunt or harm the pigeons but instead act as a natural deterrent, using their presence to discourage roosting.

Previous attempts to manage the issue, including installing plastic owls, playing recorded hawk sounds, and applying fire gel, proved ineffective. Northern’s commercial director, Alex Hornby, stated that the initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance customer experience and reduce ongoing maintenance costs.

The trial, which began in February, will be monitored closely, with the potential for expansion to other affected stations if successful. This approach has been used in other urban areas, such as London train stations, where hawks have successfully reduced pigeon populations without resorting to harmful measures.

🥖 Merienda Bakery & Restaurant Coming to Beverley

A new bakery and restaurant, Merienda, is set to open in Beverley, offering fresh bread, pastries, cakes, and a Mexican-inspired "small plates" menu. The venture was founded by Josh and Lea, who worked at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Mexico City. While awaiting planning approval, they are hosting private dining experiences in Beverley. The exact location will be announced soon.

🏡 New Affordable Housing Project Completed in Beverley

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has completed a new affordable housing development on Burden Road, featuring four council houses with solar panels and air-source heat pumps. The project was funded by the council and Homes England.

🏛️ Hull & East Yorkshire Combined Authority Holds First Meeting

The newly formed Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority (HEYCA) held its first meeting in Hessle, setting a £27M budget and appointing Mark Rogers as Interim Chief Executive. The authority aims to drive regional devolution.

🍻 Homes Planned for The Light Dragoon Pub Car Park

Plans have been submitted to build two three-bedroom homes on the car park of The Light Dragoon pub in Etton. The pub, closed since 2019, is set to reopen as “The Pub at Etton” this month after renovations.

💰 East Riding Hits £1 Billion in Investment Since 2020

East Riding has recorded the highest economic growth in the region, with over £1B in investment since 2020. Major projects include Siemens Mobility’s £200M train facility in Goole and Metsä Tissue’s sustainable tissue paper mill at the Humber Freeport.

🥞 Big Beverley Pancake Race a Flipping Success

The Big Beverley Pancake Race saw crowds cheering on costumed competitors racing through town. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Beverley and funded by Beverley Town Council, the event was hailed as "Beverley at its best."

💷 Beverley Town Council Precept to Increase by Less than 2%

The 2025-26 precept has been set at £411,550, marking a 1.98% rise. This means a Band D property will pay £64.33 annually, an increase of £1.25, funding Christmas lights, CCTV, and community grants.
