🎨 Arts leaders urge mayoral candidates to back culture in devolution plans
With the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority set to elect its first mayor this May, arts and culture advocates are calling for creative investment to be made a key priority. HEY Creative, a regional coalition supporting cultural growth, has launched a devolution manifesto urging all candidates to embed arts, heritage and culture across policy areas like education, transport, and economic development.

The sector contributes over £35 million annually to the local economy and includes more than 250 venues. Leaders from organisations including Freedom Festival, Absolutely Cultured and We Are Creative gathered on World Theatre Day to champion the arts as essential to the region’s prosperity.

The manifesto also calls for a mayoral hustings focused on arts and heritage, now scheduled for April 9 at East Riding Theatre. Advocates believe the combined authority offers a "huge opportunity" to elevate the creative sector and strengthen community ties through cultural policy. More
