π’ North Sea Oil Tanker Collision: Ongoing Disaster and Investigation π
A major maritime emergency is unfolding in the North Sea after a catastrophic collision between the US-flagged oil tanker Stena Immaculate and the Portuguese container ship Solong. The crash, which occurred near the Humber Estuary on March 10, has left one crew member missing, vessels ablaze, and raised serious environmental concerns.
What Happened?
At around 9:50 AM, the Solong - traveling at 16 knots - collided with the Stena Immaculate, which was nearly stationary at anchor. The impact caused immediate fires and explosions, forcing dozens of crew members to abandon ship. Emergency services, including the RNLI and Coastguard, launched a large-scale rescue operation, saving 36 people. However, one crew member remains missing and is presumed dead.
Environmental Risks & Legal Actions
The Stena Immaculate was carrying jet fuel, which has since leaked into the sea, while the Solong contained hazardous materials, including sodium cyanide. A five-mile exclusion zone has been enforced to prevent further contamination. Meanwhile, Humberside Police have arrested the Solongβs Russian captain on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.
