Host of Investments Confirmed at First HEYCA Meeting 🚀

A series of investments were confirmed at the first meeting of the newly established Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority (HEYCA), held on March 5 at the ergo business centre near the Humber Bridge. Key funding announcements included £15 million for transport, flood mitigation, and coastal erosion projects, additional investment in the offshore wind sector, and £1 million for housing development in Howden.

The HEYCA Executive Board includes representatives from Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, with an elected mayor set to lead following the May 1 election. Councillors expressed optimism about the authority’s potential to drive regional development.

Russian Ship Captain Appears in Court Over North Sea Crash ⚖️

Vladimir Motin, the Russian captain of a container ship that collided with a US tanker off the Yorkshire coast, has appeared in Hull Magistrates’ Court charged with gross negligence manslaughter. The 59-year-old, who captained the Portuguese vessel Solong, confirmed his identity during the hearing but did not provide a UK address.

East Yorkshire Poultry Business Invests in Renewable Energy 🌱

Soanes Poultry has invested £850,000 in a solar power system designed to cut its carbon footprint. The 1,648-panel system will generate 727,000 kWh annually, enough to power 269 homes, while reducing CO2 emissions by 156 tonnes in its first year. The company continues to expand its green initiatives, complementing existing biomass and wind energy efforts.

Sniffing Out Clues in Beverley’s Easter Treasure Hunt for Dogs 🐶

A unique Easter treasure hunt for dogs and their owners will take place in Beverley from April 4 to 22. Organized by Lucy Clark of Oh My Dog, the event invites participants to follow a trail between dog-friendly businesses, collect clues, and solve a secret password. A £7.50 entry fee per dog includes treats, a voucher, and a completion certificate.

PM: HS2 Funding for East Riding ‘Being Looked At’ 🚆

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has responded to concerns over £300 million in promised transport funding for Hull and East Yorkshire following HS2’s Northern Leg cancellation. Local leaders continue to push for clarity, while a Department for Transport spokesperson confirmed that the region will receive a share of £650 million, including £13 million for bus services and £26 million for highways.
